Moby was born in Harlem, New York and later lived with his mother in Darien, Connecticut. He was called ‘Moby’ due to his supposed relationship to Herman Melville, author of Moby Dick. He is also sometimes known as Voodoo Child and Schaumgummi.
He learned to play music when he was nine years old. He was trained in classical guitar and later learned drums and piano. In the period of 1982 to 1985, he became a member of the Vatican Commandos which released the EP Hit Squad for God. Moby was also in AWOL, a post-punk group.
In 1989, he signed a contract with Instinct Records after actively looking for a record deal. Moby said that when he signed for the label, it did not yet have an office or name.
Under Instinct, Moby first released the single ‘Mobility’. He however gained popularity after ‘Go’, his second single. In October 1991, the song went to the UK top ten, and enabled Moby to appear on Top of the Pops. The song used a string line from a theme of the TV programme Twin Peaks. From 1992 to 1993, Moby’s singles included ‘Voodoo Child’, ‘Next is the E’, and ‘Thousand’.
From 1991 to 1992, he worked with artists like Michael Jackson, The Prodigy, Orbital, Erasure, The B-52's and Ten City. Furthermore, in 1992, Moby toured with Richie Hawtin, John Acquaviva and The Prodigy.
In 1993, Moby transferred to Mute Records and released the EP Move. He also appeared on Top of the Pops. He also toured in North America along with Apex and Orbital. His first album with Mute Records was Everything Is Wrong in 1995. Some copies of the album included Underwater, a bonus CD which featured instrumental ambient music.
Everything Is Wrong earned acclaim from the critics. He later performed at Lollapalooza along with Sonic Youth and Beck. Furthermore, in 1996 he released Everything Is Wrong—Mixed and Remixed.
His album Animal Rights was released in 1996. He toured Europe alongside Soundgarden and Red Hot Chili Peppers. The album included a cover of ‘That's When I Reach for My Revolver’ by Mission of Burma. It also featured ‘Come on Baby’ which was performed by Moby at the Top of the Pops.
I Like to Score was released in 1997 and included a version of the James Bond Theme. In 1999, Moby released Play which initially had slow sales but eventually sold ten million records. Furthermore, Moby: Play the DVD was released on July 2001 and was nominated for a Grammy award.
He later created the Area: One Festival, a touring festival which featured several genres of music. He also got into a confrontation with the rapper Eminem at the 2002 MTV Video Music Awards.
In 2005, Moby released Hotel. The singles ‘Lift Me Up’ and ‘Slipping Away’ became hits in Europe. In 2008, he released Last Night which featured electronic dance music. In 2009, Moby released Wait For Me, the follow-up album to Last Night.
